IT Security

In recent years, the security threat facing companies has fundamentally changed. New types of attack have emerged, and the frequency of such attacks has increased. Added to this, is the proliferation of new mobile storage devices on the market, which create additional problems for IT managers battling to maintain the integrity of their networks.

New attack forms
Attackers are no longer simply targeting assaults on the perimeter of the network, such as web servers, but are now increasingly exploiting the internet to infect desktops, laptops and workstations. One of the most significant trends has been the rise in so-called ‘blended’ threats, exploits that use multiple modes of infection – ranging from hacking and computer worms to denial of service attacks and website defacements – to create a single, advanced assault, that overwhelms defences.

Three relatively new forms of security threat, which all companies need to be aware of are: Spyware, Phishing and Spamming Viruses.

  • Spyware
Spyware is any software that covertly gathers user information through the user's internet connection without his or her knowledge, usually for advertising purposes. Spyware applications are typically bundled as a hidden component of freeware or shareware programs that can be downloaded from the internet. Once installed, the spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else.
  • Phishing
Phishing, or carding, is a ploy that uses spam to deceive customers into disclosing sensitive information such as passwords, bank account or credit card details.
  • Spamming viruses
Spam is unsolicited "junk" e-mail sent to large numbers of people to promote products or services. There is now a growing trend for spammers to combine their spam with viruses to make it more difficult to filter and allow it to spread faster.
